Did you know...?

  • King George V laid the foundation stone at the University in July 1920.
  • Swansea University was the 29th university to be established in the British Isles and began life with just 89 students.
  • From the outset, Swansea was both a scientific and a technical institution that was linked to the great industries of South Wales. It was also a centre of excellence in the humanities.
  • The city gave its new civic university an enviable site in rolling, coastal parkland. It also donated Singleton Abbey, the neo-Gothic mansion that dates back to 1780.
  • In 1921, Swansea appointed the first female professor in a British university.
