Swansea University offers a wide range of scholarships and bursaries for new and current students. New scholarships are being added all the time, so make sure you check the listings regularly to see what’s available. However, it is important to remember that there is a wealth of support available to students from external bodies in addition to that provided by their institution. Below is a quick guide to some of your alternative funding options.
Eligible Undergraduates can apply for student loans from the UK government and full details regarding this can be found on the DirectGov website. Extra help is available for disabled students, adult dependants grants, students with children as well as the Access to Learning Fund.
Most students fund their studies through 'portfolio funding' in which they gather funds from a variety of sources. In addition to the scholarships and bursaries detailed on previous pages, there are a range of other funding sources which prospective students are advised to explore:
Research Councils are government funded agencies which support research in different discplines. They provide a variety of awards to support postgraduate study but in most cases, applications for financial support should not be submitted directly to the Research Council but through the University department in which you intend to study.
You will need to identify the relevant Research Council for your subject area and visit their website for further information on the support available and application procedures:
Unlike for undergraduate study, the Student Loan Company does not offer loans for postgraduate study. There are, however, a number of other loans available for postgraduate students:
Career Development Loans
Loans of up to £8,000 are available to help students fund the cost of vocational postgraduate courses. They are available to students who intend to live or train in the UK and intend to work in the UK or EU after completion of their course.

Several charitable trusts offer limited funding opportunities or may consider approaches for funding from prospective students. Listed below are some current opportunities, but this list is by no means exhaustive - a little research could turn up several charities whose remit is similar to your subject of interest.
