Swansea University - English Language Requirements

English Language Entrance Requirements

A guide to English language requirements for entry to study at Swansea University

International applicants are expected to demonstrate a good level of English. English Language requirements are normally judged in terms of formal IELTS (International English Language Testing System) or TOEFL (Teaching of English as a Foreign Language) scores.  This is because IELTS and TOEFL are widely available at thousands of testing centres worldwide. However, the University also recognises a range of other English Language tests and qualifications. A list of acceptable English tests can be found here.  If your test is not listed please contact the Admissions Office for more information.

Students who completed their school or university education through the medium of English may not need to provide an English test score.  The University's English requirement for many English-speaking countries can be found here.   If your country is not listed please contact the Admissions Office for more information.

The University's English Language Training Service (ELTS) offers a range of English Language courses during the year. ELTS is an approved IELTS Testing Centre and also offers its own internal test of English Language proficiency, which is recognised for the purpose of admission to the University's courses.

Undergraduate and Postgraduate Degrees

Most academic departments will ask for an IELTS score of 6.0 (or equivalent) for undergraduate degrees and IELTS 6.5 (or equivalent) for postgraduate degrees.  But there are exceptions and applicants should always check with the individual departments, or check the conditions included in their offer letter.

Applicants with English Language Proficiency Scores below IELTS 6.0 below the required level.
In the case of applicants whose test scores fall below the required level, the University recommends English Language tuition in ELTS before the beginning degree-level studies, as outlined here.

Applicants with English Language scores of IELTS 4.0 or below cannot be taught English within the University, but could study at a local Further Education College.

If you have not taken an English examination you can attend ELTS  for a minimum of three months.

Applicants should note however, that if they fail to obtain the above scores, or have not taken a test, they can still apply, and if accepted academically, will receive a conditional offer. The condition will be that an English language examination is taken and suitable score is obtained.
