Two lecturers in the Economics section of the School, Professor Ian Jeffries and Dr Melanie Jones, have just received commendations in the 2009 Outstanding Teaching category from the Higher Education Academy (HEA) Economics Network. HEA Economic Teaching Awards recognize exemplary teaching practice that encourages understanding of and inspire interest in economics. In the past Economic lecturers in the School have won an unprecedented number of these HEA awards, and it is therefore not surprising that Economics continues to do well in the National Student Survey. In 2009 National Student Survey Economics in Swansea was the top Economics department in Wales and in the top five of all Economic departments in the UK, with 93 per cent of full time students satisfied with their course.
Commenting on their awards Professor Jeffries and Dr Jones said:
Professor Jeffries: “This comment by a first year student makes a career in higher education so worthwhile – ‘You are a passionate lecturer who has inspired me to become an economist’”
Dr Melanie Jones: “This award came as a complete surprise but I am obviously delighted. As a Swansea graduate myself I am really pleased to be able to contribute to the high quality of teaching offered within Economics”
