Break-out sessions for Years 11-13 showcase the range of learning experiences we offer. Students returning from their year abroad will tell their stories. A couple of sessions are for teachers and careers advisors: a chance to discuss with members of our recruitment, admissions, and schools/colleges liaison teams, and with other colleagues. Employability is one of the day’s themes, along with curiosity and
enjoyment, and the ability to combine Modern Languages with all sorts of
other degree subjects.
The Department of Modern Languages at Swansea is the biggest and most dynamic language teaching institution in Wales, offering a wide range of degree schemes to suit your interests and career aspirations. Our Academic staff have a world-class reputation for the standard of their research and we are committed to deliver truly exciting teaching programmes which are intellectually wide-ranging, stimulating and demanding.
Modern Languages is home to five research centres and groupings: the Centre for Contemporary German Literature (CCGL); the Centre for the Comparative Study of the Americas (CECSAM); the Centre for Research into Iberian Stage and Screen (CRISS); the Centre for Translation Research and Multilingualism (TRAM) and the Research Group for the Study of Modern European Ideologies, Conflict and Memory (MEICAM). The Centres promote research through collaborative work, research seminars, informal reading groups, conferences, publications and also inform and enhance our teaching.
We offer Undergraduate courses in the subjects of French, German, Italian, Spanish-Hispanic Studies and Translation and we are currently the only university that offers you the chance to study several European languages through the medium of Welsh. We also offer Postgraduate Taught Masters degrees, the MA in European Cultures, MA in Latin American Studies, the MA in Screening/Staging Europe and the MA in Translation with Language Technology (one or two year programmes). As a modern language student at Swansea, you will benefit from our facilities, including our labs where you can access a vast range of foreign language channels and our collection of foreign language films housed in the library. You will also have plenty of opportunity to participate in cultural events specific to the country of the language(s) you are studying and to meet native speakers through our student societies. Our students study in a warm and friendly atmosphere and have the opportunity to interact with lecturers, visiting Faculty and co-students.
Employability rates for Modern Languages graduates are very good. For some jobs excellent language skills are a pre-requisite, e.g. teaching, translating and interpreting and some civil service departments. There are many other careers where you will use your language alongside other skills, for instance in the media, global busines, finance and accountancy, government, international trade and sales, marketing, hospitality and many other fields. You will also develop important transferable skills with us, such as communication and analytical skills. Some graduates go on to study Masters degrees, PhDs and pursue a career in Academia.
